Science Loves Wooden Spoons

Too often, The Standup Gourmet™ Misfit Crew encounters overflows from boiling pots of liquid, which is a great annoyance when cooking on gas burners.

They have concluded that placing a wooden spoon over the pot of liquid can control the potential for overflows.

Supposedly, science tells us that wooden spoons can affect the liquid’s overall temperature. Wood can generally reduce the temperature because of its ability to interfere with the surface tension and undercurrents of the liquid. Wooden spoons are known to be poor heat conductors, which is why we use them as cooking utensils.

It is all about heat conduction and kinetic energy. Boring stuff, but helpful when you’re cooking!
Thank you Science!
